The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
